Certainly, it’s hard to miss when you have such handsome clients as Amy + Erik. However, these two threw me a curve from the outset of our session in downtown (yes, we have one) Des Moines. My usual portrait strategy is to distract the subjects from their camera-shyness by telling them to focus on each other rather than the camera. I only half-jokingly call it the (cue the Journey) “Loving, Touching, Squeezing” method of portait photography. It’s a “hands-on” method. I put the 2 in a cool spot with good light and they occupy themselves by keeping their hands on each other whilst I do my camera gymnastics. “Um, yeah,” they said after I placed them in front of my favorite warehouse doors, “we don’t really hold hands and stuff.” You know that funny tilt of the head a dog gives you when they think you might possibly have mentioned food or going for a walk. Hurhhh?! (Scooby Doo). That was my reaction. That’s cool, I appreciate a challenge. I know that these 2 would eventually warm to my iron-fisted direction.
I photographed Amy’s sister’s wedding last fall and where she and Erik were the maid of honor and best man. That day went perfectly and I have no reason to expect anything less from these 2 in September. Thanks for playing, Amy + Erik. Now, got get a room, sheesh.
