Maritza + Shane: Shelby, Iowa wedding photography

Working at home is not so unusual. Getting married at your “office” which also happens to be on the family farm where you now live takes it to a new level. Maritza + Shane are managers of Willow Creek Glass Chapel in Shelby, Iowa. Given the chapel’s setting in the midst of prairie and cornfields, it’s like a lovely little mirage.

Maritza was a warrior on the big day considering it was about 130 degrees and, oh yeah, she was over 8 months pregnant. Despite all that, Shane + Maritza couldn’t keep their hands off each other and I appreciate that. If I have to tell a couple to grope each other, it takes the sizzle out of the steak.

Anna + Adam: Ames, Iowa wedding photography

You might remember the soggy tale of Anna + Adam’s outdoor ceremony from an earlier post. No pun intended but such weather has been par for the course this season. I don’t know if it’s climate change, God’s wrath on Iowa for certain judicial decisions or just plain nasty luck but the weather has been brutal this summer. Mother Nature’s favorite blunt instrument this season has been the stifling combo of heat and humidity.

It’s a testament to the force of romantic notions (and some people’s drive to get a free dinner and open bar) that I’m still blessed with subjects that are truly having the time of their lives. Maybe love is all you need. Well, love and a whole lot of talcum powder.

What’s worse than Bridezilla?

It’s a common question at weddings: “I bet you see all kinds of weirdness. What’s your craziest wedding story?” Maybe after 8 years of weddings, I’m immune to crazy but I prefer to think, for the most part, I attract the kind of client who is more laid-back than high-maintenance. This Saturday was a rigorous test for any bride and groom. Rain was a constant threat all day but it appeared we would be able to squeeze in the 5pm ceremony. Alas, just before our bride and groom were to enter, the wind ominously switched from south to north and all hell and hail broke loose, as you can see. (It’s Monday, Godzilla added for my own chuckles).

With the exception of a slightly-rattled flowergirl, Anna + Adam and all of their guests reacted in the best way possible, laughing at the wet turn of events and their devastated ‘dos. Five minutes later, Mother Nature having had her laugh and Godzilla safely back in the woods, the chairs were dried off and love took center stage.

P.S. Yes, I know I this is a Photoshop travesty but my geek friends should just move along.
